Mazabuka – Ndeke Compound

Mazabouka is approx 160km. from Lusaka in the Southern province of Zambia. Mazabuka is a main growing area for sugar cane and is the base for Zamsugar, the government sugar company. The compound around Mazabouka are very poor and with a high population. Again here, there is a high number of children orphaned as a result of the HIV/Aids virus.

Mazabuka Special Needs Centre

The Mazabuka Association for the Disabled provides many essential services for the disabled people of Mazabuka and its hinterland.

Due to the efforts of the Mazabuka Association the construction of a new school is no longer a dream but a reality as a site has been acquired and some funding from different agencies promised.

The plan is to have the following:

• Eight Classrooms in two School Blocks,

• An Activity Centre to include educational equipment, an Arts and Crafts Room, Cookery room, A Skills Room where pupils can do basic Carpentry, Plumbing and Needlework and a Physiotherapy Room.

• An Administration Block to accommodate a principal’s office, staffroom and offices for the facilitators of the projects.

• A playground designed especially for disabled children while a soccer and netball field will encourage participation in sport.

• An Income Generating Shop to sell the produce from the garden and goods from the different departments.

The help of parents will be welcomed and they will be encouraged to participate in the various projects.
The Association is very eager to see this project started to support the empowerment of these children with special needs through education and training.

TOUCH Ireland is funding the Activity Centre in 2012/2013.
